HARMSE WORK SAMPLES

STANDARDISED USING MODAPTS

Suzanne Harmse is an occupational therapist with over 10 years of experience in vocational rehabilitation. She completed her master’s degree in 2018, with a focus on the use of MODAPTS as an assessment tool used in work evaluations. She has taught MODAPTS at both an undergraduate and post-graduate level in South Africa.

HARMSE WORK SAMPLES are work samples that Suzanne has developed in her career, which have now been moderated by a working group of occupational therapists, as well as an industrial engineer with extensive experience in MODAPTS.

The samples’ time standards are determined by MODAPTS analyses of the activities. Accuracy norms are developed through extensive testing of persons in the open labour market in positions that require the specific skills assessed in the work samples. Where possible, the samples are benchmarked against other, similar assessments. The above is done to ensure the validity of the samples.

Each sample has a manual with instructions on administration and scoring, but we are always able to assist if any further clarification is needed. If you want to make your own samples - head to our webinar on work sample development under Learn at FunctionWell! We are continuously developing new samples, so keep an eye on the store or subscribe to our mailing list for new releases. We value your input, feel free to let us know if you have any specific needs for work samples.

AVAILABLE SAMPLES

HWS: Writing and typing

  • To assess work speed in writing and typing tasks respectively.

  • This work sample allows your client to copy text written in common English about general topics. The sample is long enough to observe the effects of symptoms on performance, but not so long that it becomes impractical. The sample is a digital file that you can print for own use, but may not be shared.

  • R2000.00

HWS: Salary file

  • To assess work speed and accuracy in a clerical task that involves basic mathematical equations and the use of a calculator.

  • This is a physical work sample, that standardises structuring, and reduces the need for making copies. This durable sample allows the client to write on a wipeable surface, and the therapist to mark their response quickly with the use of a memorandum mask. The sample includes a calculator, pen and cloth - just add your own stopwatch! Scoring is done online via a QR code, and accuracy norms are available based on empirical data collected from a sample of the open labour market.

  • R4000.00

HWS: Bilateral Hand Use

  • To assess work speed in a bilateral task that involves in-hand manipulation and tool use.

  • A compact, portable work sample, that’s packaging doubles as structuring. Your client will be expected to wire an electrical block, similar to a plug. Inherently the task requires the use of both hands, and the use of tools. The test is scored online via a QR code.

  • R2500.00

HWS: Postural tolerances

  • To assess work speed in a bilateral dexterous task performed in various postures.

  • This portable sample allows your client to work in any or all of the following positions: standing, working overhead while standing, stooping and crouching. The task requires bilateral hand use and takes about 5 minutes to complete for each posture. You can administer each posture individually and use the overall scores to comment on work ability from a dynamic postural tolerance perspective. All you need is a shelf to place the sample at various heights and a stopwatch.

  • R5000.00

HWS: Medium load handling

  • To assess work speed in a medium load handling task that includes lifting at waist and overhead level, bilateral and unilateral carrying.
